My Life is an Open Book Speaker Series - John Thorndike

The series will feature speakers who have lived fascinating and interesting lives. The series begins in August and ends in November.

John Thorndike’s father, Joe Thorndike, was managing editor of Life at the height of its popularity immediately following World War II. He was the founder of American Heritage and Horizon magazines, the author of three books, and the editor of a dozen more. But at age 92, in the space of six months he stopped reading or writing or carrying on detailed conversations. He could no longer tell time or make a phone call. He was convinced that the governor of Massachusetts had come to visit and was in the refrigerator.
Five million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's, and like many of them, Joe Thorndike's one great desire was to remain in his own house. To honor his wish, John left his own home and moved into his father's upstairs bedroom on Cape Cod. For a year, in a house filled with file cabinets, photos, and letters, John explored his father's mind, his parents' divorce, and his mother's secrets. The Last of His Mind is the bittersweet account of a son's final year with his father, and a candid portrait of an implacable disease.

John Thorndike is the author of two novels, Anna Delaney's Child and The Potato Baron, and a previous memoir, Another Way Home. John will speak at the First Christian Church on Thursday, November 4 at 6:00 pm.

For more information, call 270-781-4882. Free tickets are available at the Main Library and Bob Kirby Branch.

Jason Aldean in Concert

After selling two million copies of his first two albums, topping the charts with five smash hits, racking up award nominations and hitting every stop on the requisite "new artist" tour circuit for the last three years, country rocker Jason Aldean is on the road promoting a very successful headlining tour along with his third album, Wide Open.

Jason Aldean has recorded three albums on the independent Broken Bow Records label: Jason Aldean, Relentless, and Wide Open, in 2005, 2007, and 2009 respectively. These albums have accounted for ten singles on the Billboard country singles charts, including the Number One hits "Why", "She's Country", "Big Green Tractor" and "The Truth."

His first single, "Hicktown", was released in early 2005. It served as the lead-off to his album Jason Aldean, and reached a peak of #10 on the BillboardHot Country Songs charts. The album also produced his first Number One hit in "Why", as well as the #4-peaking "Amarillo Sky", which had previously been a non-charting single in 2002 for McBride & the Ride. Amarillo Sky earned a 2006 ACM nomination for song of the year and video of the year. Jason Aldean earned the title of "Top New Male Vocalist" at the 2006 Academy of Country Music Awards. He has sold over one million copies in the United States, and was certified platinum by the RIAA in 2007.

He released a seventh single titled "She's Country" to radio on December 1, 2008. It is the first single from his third album Wide Open which was released on April 7, 2009. The single debuted at #51 on the Hot Country Songs chart in late-November 2008. His seventh consecutive Top 40 hit on the country charts, it is also his first Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and became his second number-one hit, and his first since "Why" in May 2006. The next single, the David Lee Murphy-Jim Collins co-write "Big Green Tractor," became Aldean's third Number One hit. Wide Open debuted at #2 on the Top Country Albums chart. "The Truth" became the album's third consecutive Number One hit in January 2010, with "Crazy Town" being the album's fourth single.

Tickets for Jason Aldean are $42.75 and $37.75. All seats are reserved and ticket prices include facility and parking fees. There will also be two pit sections sold on the floor next to the stage that will be standing room only; no seating is provided in these areas.
